Free Just Eat up for grabs as millions of pet owners “trapped” inside this firework season

  • New study reveals 54% of pet owners DREAD firework season
  • To mitigate the “most stressful night of the year” pawrents can create their perfect night in with Just Eat, with FREE takeaway up for grabs and shop on-demand treats for their furry friends

New research from Just Eat has found that pet parents do not want to “remember, remember, the 5th of November”, as over half (54%) dread the tradition due to their pets’ fear of fireworks. Drastically, 51% even admitted they find it one of the most stressful nights of the year.

For some, this time of year is full of fun firework celebrations for Halloween, Diwali, and Bonfire Night, but the reality for pet parents is very different. Many have to forgo social engagements, as one of the busiest times of the year in their social calendars, to stay in and look after their pets, as 37% say they are too scared to leave their pet on their own with the noisy celebrations going on outside.

With pet owners spending on average 11 nights in November to distract their pets during firework season, Just Eat recognises paw-rents need pampering too. Between Thursday 31st October and Tuesday 5th November, Just Eat’s animal-loving Ai Assistant on the app will be offering those stuck inside a free meal to enjoy a night in with their furry friend.  They just need to type ‘PAW ME’ into the chatbot for the chance to get a £15 off voucher code.

With a limited number of codes available per day, until 5th November, they will be provided on a first come first serve basis. Pet owners lucky enough to grab one of the codes can order from a choice of thousands of popular restaurants and locally loved independent takeaways to fuel their cosy night in. Plus, as customers can now shop on-demand via Just Eat, pet owners can now top up their basket with pet treats, toys and care supplies from leading supermarkets and pet care brands to keep them happy too.

Top Dog at Just Eat, Andrew Cocker, Marketing Director said: “We know that pet owners across the UK will be cosying up with their furry friends this firework season to keep them safe. That’s why we wanted to make their night-in extra special, so that pawrents can celebrate while caring for their pet.”

This reality for pet parents has sadly led to over a quarter (27%) believing that special occasions like Bonfire Night have lost the excitement, with more than two thirds (48%) confessing they would prefer to spend a cosy night in with their pet instead.

Doug McPherson, a proud pawrent to Babs the corgi, says: “What makes this time of year especially difficult as a pet owner is all the different celebrations happening throughout the month, so fireworks could go off on any given night during this period. As a result, I’ve had to cancel a lot of plans at this time of year. I’m sad to miss out on these celebrations, but having a cosy evening in and ordering from Just Eat really lifts my spirits, and means I can be there to do my duty as a pawrent.”

Owners are having to get creative in their methods of placating their pets, with 22% playing classical music, while others (19%) use distraction tactics like presenting their pet’s favourite meal, and 14% desperately try to achieve the perfect calming mood lighting. When the lengths pawrents go to to calm their four-legged friends fail, 62% admit that they are left feeling bored, frustrated or disappointed about the prospect of staying in.

While fireworks are being let off outside, 23% of pet parents said that their fur babies curl up on the sofa out of stress, and 22% said they want to be held all night, meaning many are forced to watch the display through their window.

In a bid to cheer themselves up this Bonfire Night, almost half (47%) of pet owners say they are planning to order a takeaway, and a third plan to binge their favourite TV show. Some (29%) are planning on enjoying a nice glass of wine, and 28% percent are going to treat themselves to their top choice of sweets and chocolate.

To help inspire pawrents as they prepare for their night-in with their pet, Just Eat recently introduced its AI-powered assistant where hungry Brits can strike up conversation with the chatbot by clicking on the ‘sparkle’ icon on the app. Designed to empower everyday convenience, the tool saves customers time and gives them more ways to order. Whether that’s directly ordering a favourite meal or groceries when instructed, responding to queries about dishes, offering personalised recommendations based on users’ previous orders and reviews, the AI-powered assistant can customise orders and take items through to checkout in seconds.
